Jewellery & Metal (MA)

Bin Wen(E5)

Bin Wen graduated from BIFT (Beijing Fashion Institute of Technology School) in Jewelry Design and is now studying at the Royal College of Art in England, majoring in Jewelry and Metal. His representative works include "Self-Portrait of Narcissist Jewelry" and "Self-Portrait of Mocker Jewelry".

In the post-epidemic era, he tries combining jewelry with virtual reality technology to provide more decadent design ideas for the field of virtual jewelry design. By using his image as the basis for designing virtual characters, he created a cyborg-style mechanical prosthesis for them, thus broadening the scope of jewelry expression.

Bin Wen(E5)-statement

Bin Wen is a virtual jewelry artist, who tries to combine physical jewelry design with virtual design to convey the artistic concept of his works. His graduation design "Self-portrait of Sarcasm in Jewelry” extracts the unique icon that comes from the Megalian (Korean feminism group) to realize his sarcastic jewelry, and notice the gesture, "👌", which also shows the small eyes in a racist way. This discovery prompted him to combine the action and the icon to make glasses and accessories that can have two metaphors simultaneously.

Because he is interested in the satirical culture on the social network, expressing those people in jewelry is what he thinks about. observing different people who are satirical on the internet and keep good relationships with their friends—learning their speaking tone, habit, countenance, and even their hobby within their relationship with others. Summarizing the characteristics of those sarcastic people on social networks and visualizing them.

The reason why he finds interest in the communication with the netizens is that they are so humorous with immeasurable creativity. They use their creativity to create a huge variety of emojis, memes, and popular phrases on the Internet. This satirical language quickly comes into fashion on the Internet, without any deliberate attempt to create such an atmosphere; people are simply inspired by the ubiquitous news and events.

With the help of virtual technology, the author will seek to understand the ironic attitude and ideas of Duchamp's ready-made art to Banksy's electronic works, to find out how the theme of satire can be created in virtual jewelry art. The methods and techniques used to create the corresponding ironic works of the artists, such as narrative, exaggeration, and re-creation, are summarized and used as a method for the creation of jewelry to further explore the ironic nature and characteristics of mass and art.
