Guangyan Luo

MA 2020.9 -- 2022.6 Royal Academy of Art

BA 2016.9-2020.6 Northeast Forestry University, Environmental Design

Guangyan Luo was born in Tai'an, China. His projects and work cover architecture, interior design, exhibition design and art. During his postgraduate studies, he became interested in the reuse of buildings and chose the Reuse platform. The platform is essentially repurposing and repositioning of what already exists to achieve a completely new context.

His graduation thesis Flow Architecture and Toyo Ito got a distinction. In the thesis, he reinterpreted the classic works of Pritzker Prize winner Toyo ITO from the perspective of flow architecture and proposed new ideas on the development of space design in the post-epidemic era.

Guangyan Luo-statement

LMM —— LUO

Guangyan Luo is an active, enthusiastic and ambitious interior designer. It can be said that he completed his graduation project with his love of British maritime history.

He loved to explore Britain's sea history and culture. During his second year of postgraduate studies, he developed a keen interest in Britain's maritime history. He visited almost all the important dockyards in the UK including Portsmouth, Chatham, Greenwich, Cornwall and Dog Islands. There he saw aircraft carriers, HMS VICTORY, HMS M.33, the Mary Rose, the Warrior1860 (the Finest ship of war in the world) and other important ships of historical value. He learned about the economic development of Britain, the history of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, and the emergence of important historical figures during that period, such as the monument and bronze statue of Nelson in Trafalgar Square.

During his visits to these museums, he also learned how to design a more attractive and enriching museum experience. The way of supporting the hull, the method of making the canoe, the choice of materials, and so on, all gave him a lot of inspiration for his project.

INITIAL CONCEPT
INITIAL CONCEPT – I took inspiration from the shipyard and extracted some design vocabulary, such as crane, steel structure bracket, cantilever, teak floor, iron railings, etc. I used these elements to design and reinforce the main route. The beams of the structure can support the hull, and they can also move up and down depending on the needs of the museum.
I extended the underground space to make the main road more powerful and more rhythmic.

When we finished visiting Lighthouse, we could take the elevator all the way down to the ground floor. The spaces here are quite different. You can see that I used polished cement with strong reflections and painted them in light blue because I wanted to immerse people in the sea.
