Dorothy HL Pong

I am a Hong Kong born, London-based designer, currently studying MA Visual Communication. My work revolves around how we view society through visual language and communication, and through social and political issues. This informs the areas of my practice, which includes lettering, calligraphy, symbols, logos, printing and making. It also guides my process to be readable and comprehensible for all groups. At the same time, I wish my practices can stand up for this ideal in a world in which freedom of speech faces increasingly adverse conditions.

Keep Calm and Carry On.

Dorothy HL Pong-statement

The work follows the situation of two of Hong Kong's biggest pro-democracy media outlets toppled after enormous government pressure, a series of arrests and police raids on their newsrooms.

My project 'Living in Truth' strives to tell people the real live story of how professional reporting in Hong Kong is now so dangerous that journalists might end up in jail. And while the government has dismissed the idea that press freedom has been undermined, the future of independent reporting looks increasingly bleak and the number of independent media outlets is rapidly dwindling.

'By silencing independent media, the People's Republic of China and local authorities undermine Hong Kong's credibility and viability. A confident government that is unafraid of the truth embraces a free press.'
