Inger Sif Heeschen-statement

Through an interdisciplinary practice, my artistic research explores notions of origin and progress through a translation of cultural objects and artifacts.

I grew up on the Danish Island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, where a scenery of burial hills still enthrones the horizon. Witnessing several archaeological digs for traces of a former iron age settlement started an early interest in history told through objects.

Like archaeologists deciphering a vase from just a few fragments, I practice a particular form of reverse approximation by defining my own potsherds, from where I create new connections and narratives. My desire is to sample and merge opposites, with a great interest in traces perceived through process – ideas of the mould, the iteration, the copy and the print.

I am eager to contextualise my work within and beyond traditional formats of display and in the context of an interdisciplinary network of artists. Facilitating and curating exhibitions and events is an essential part of my practice.

As a result of studying and participating in several residencies abroad, I have developed methods of working in response to my current surroundings.

Getting familiar with a specific place can almost be akin to learning etiquette. By approaching iconic imagery, the arcane and archaic, My main aim - with a subtle sense of anarchism - is to create objects that meander across time.

City Scanner investigates my interest in urban culture and my first attempt to incorporate print techniques into my ceramic practice. I have been navigating London during which time I have been sampling iconographic imagery of the city. I trace in 2D using a document hand scanner, to capture and distort iconic London city signs, and legendary UK released album covers of the 1960s. This process has evolved into the 3D sampling of ornamentation from fences and gates, which are then made into press moulds for clay and sprigging.

Downtown Digging

Featuring Artists: Alice Foxen, Zaratea Garden Hurtig, Jacob Talkowski, JP Guerrier, Nicholas Faris, Inger Sif Heeschen.

June 2nd - June 20th 2022

Curated by Zaratea Garden Hurtig & Inger Sif Heeschen

Partnering with House of Vans London we have curated the exhibition DOWNTOWN DIGGING, a showcase of graduate artwork which examines the urban environment and culture of the city.

At the opening night on the 2nd of June there were performances, artist talks and a large scale installation in the skating bowl, during which time a public audience were invited into the large 5 tunnel venue beneath Waterloo Station.

Each individual piece highlights a play on urban space, architecture, pre-conceived object function and the relationships which connect our city spaces.

For the exhibition we took over the full venue, where works were curated, juxtaposing ceramics with digital and performative art within an urban space, presenting unique visual and sensory nuances between art and skateboarding culture.

Skating and filming by Nicholas Faris.
