Kuan-Yin Fang

Kuan-Yin Fang (b.1992, Taipei) is an artist, architect and researcher based in London. Her work explores spatial contexts of Southeast Asia, narratives towards sociopolitical dynamics, and interventions with peculiar scenery. 

She has practised as an architect internationally, working on widely acclaimed projects such as UCCA Dune Art Museum (OPEN Architecture, Beijing, 2015-18) and Forest Big (Divooe Zein Architects, Taipei, 2017-18). She also participated in various group exhibitions, including Lapped Seams and Silver Linings (Standpoint Gallery, London, 2022), We Won’t Stop Showing (SET Woolwich, London, 2022), Invisible Borders (online, London/Nuremberg, 2021) and Air Made Visible (Domaine de Boisbuchet, 2012).

Fluctuating between the functionality of furniture and its failure in practice, between material presence and vacancy, Kuan-Yin Fang’s sculptural installations intervene while constantly confronting the space where they temporarily occupy.

The precarious nature of Kuan-Yin Fang’s sculptures stems from her insights into the political paradox of Taiwan. Manifested on an island with multi-colonial history, its heterogeneous landscape is a vibrant assemblage of overlapped spatio-temporal remnants. Broaching motion and migration, the work becomes ephemeral pauses, resulting from and in perpetual movement, momentarily detained in the perception of a configuration of objects.

Charged with fleeting sensations, her work is inspired by the liquidised tropics in Southeast Asian films and literary references from ‘Water and Dreams’, a poetic rumination by French philosopher Gaston Bachelard; and ‘Flights’, an agentic assemblage of short fictions, travel notes and research materials, composed by Polish novelist Olga Tokarczuk.

Place as an aspect of space pauses time. It is the momentary detainment of our perception on a configuration of objects. It is, in contradistinction to time, a static notion. Human time is divided into stages, as movement through space is broken up by place-pauses. Such pauses anchor us within the flow of time. The more pauses in space, and the more places we experience therefore, the more time elapses subjectively.

(repose) of Haptic Fiction is a reinvented piece of chair, consisting of mild steel fragments, adjustable open joints and wire ropes.

The work was exhibited in the group show Lapped Seams and Silver Linings at Standpoint Gallery. It was installed in reflection to the remaining industrial lift that was not in operation.

As an embodiment of my exploration towards spatial appropriation, (repose) of Drifting Clouds; of Moist Melancholy is a piece of furniture that embraces, contextualises and intervenes with the space where it temporarily resides.

The 1:1 drawing, with various plane views overlapped on a constantly evolving interface, provides a tangible alternative which unfolds the making process. The furniture, situated in between diagrammatic model and constructional mock-up, is an assemblage of accumulated marks, scratches, heat blushes, touch and affection.

The English word furniture, derived from French word fourniture, a term used for household equipment, is not the most direct word for its intrinsic meaning. In other continental languages, such as German Möbel or Italian mobile, which originate from the Latin word mobilis, furniture simply refers to movable objects that shape the characteristics of space. In letterpress, furniture is also the term referring to movable pieces used to layout type by blocking out empty space.

Carrying contextual meanings of both the movable and the blank, the work should have the capacity of being transported to, paused in and assembled on any site.

In typesetting, upon every movable element in a composition, a name appropriated from either bodily or domestic setting is bestowed.

Juxtaposing the letterpress glossary with my spatial memory of the atmospheric tropics, I created a literary composition, a forme in typesetting jargon, titled Dialectic of Infinite Water and A Lively, Playful Breathing.

Consisting of types and other movable components — furniture, quoin, space and chase — used throughout the process but designed not to be printed, the work plays with the agentic assemblage of paused movements and tangible white spaces.

Mingling with the composition as well as the contingency of languages and architectural miniatures, Encounter with (an) Impression in Flux is a series of prints created from the work Dialectic of Infinite Water and A Lively, Playful Breathing.

With glossy varnish printed and embossed onto Moondream, a type of synthetic paper that becomes translucent when coming across an impression; with both silver ink and varnish on aluminium foil, an essential household material that is readily bent or wrapped around objects; the prints, each of them slightly nuanced while being fragile and ever-changing, congregate into a dynamic force, emanating from a spatio-temporal configuration.

Time is different when we are in the midst of waters. We are slowed, detained and intervened by the resistance of a fluid agency. We feel like we are, while constantly falling in or out of the fictive reality, ourselves some drops moving as tiny parts of a whole. *circling*

A whole of heavy and affective memories;

a whole of turbulence and connectivity;

a whole of collective pauses that make us realise durations;

We become obscure animals in a tropical forest, sheltered by the accumulating vapour, the moist attachments and the sudden flux. An atmospheric sanctuary formed by the liminal, the rhythm in between touches and the hiatus of happenings. *circling*
