Lucija Krizman-statement

Master of Voids is a metaphorical journey through mental landscapes in which the created works comment on internal and external events, in which the artist's memories encounter an abundance of literary references, creating the site-specific installations on the border between things and matter, where tangible and intangible links are created.

Krizman draws inspiration for the process of creating an environment for thoughts from many literary and artistic sources. Krizman further builds on her thinking by considering the idea of transitions described in Dante's description of Hell in the Divine Comedy, in which the transition from one sphere to another is described as unconsciousness from which the mind emerges in a fog-like state, finding itself in another reality, all the way to dreams and Jungian archetype of "night sea journey", in which the hero disappears somewhere beyond his world, beyond consciousness, into the world of ghosts and amorphous apparitions of his subconscious.

The key aspect of Krizman's work is its materiality; the work stems from questioning the compounds of shapes and forms into hybrid creations that remind of everything but are not clearly defined, which find themselves in one of the questioned spaces in between. The installation is made up of videos and sculptures, delicate, organic forms in the spaces of non-existent time which simply exist outside the ravages of time in the primordial lakes of some ancient, or far future, epochs, and are associated with minerals or fossils of ancient animals that the human eye has never seen before. She creates forms thinking about materials and through experimentation, which is often part of the process of creation, in which personal narratives are intertwined with metaphysical research that forms an expansive artistic practice.

When thinking about the void, the artist approaches it in terms of space or processes of static potential, which is hidden or unconscious, which she calls "the poetic concept of self-reflection" and in which the artwork is represents an experiential encounter between the audience and the artwork. Lucija poses her work as a question with an unfathomable answer, as a theatrical backdrop for a play of unknown content, in which the visitors intervene with their thought processes caused by the presence in the environment of the incomprehensible and earthly, cosmic and oceanic, and rebuild and merge a new whole from the offered tangents, in a space of emptiness that is not defined and which opens up possibilities for a new dialogue.

A constant flow of whys and how’s followed by the material game in search of a higher and hidden self. A stream of various thoughts followed by their echoes…Sometimes the work lets me in, and other times it takes from me – my dreams, forms and memories. I am a collector and translator. I collect experiences and translate their language into the language of immersive environments. I expose my vulnerability to the surrounding where the work can expand and morph. But where is the Where? It is a hidden landscape I must discover. A Möbius road with a twisted surface and sharp edges lead me to the opposite of the same. The walk is challenging, dangerous but thrilling. From the village to the steep cliffs of the canyon just to find the hidden cave where You told me to wait…. Wait until the sound gets thicker and my eyes adjust to the new light….
