Moving Image Design

Hao Meng

I am a moving image artist who explores the relationship between the development of technology and the humanities and nature. I am interested in human activities and natural changes influenced by technological developments.

My practice takes technology as a starting point, and my research engages disciplines including space, postmodernism and surrealism. By reconstructing and recreating the changes in human and natural activities brought about by technology, I try to make people rethink how they should view the development of technology and the future changes in human society.

Prior to my work on the Moving Image pathway of Information Experience Design at the RCA, I completed my undergraduate studies in China with a BA in Illustration, and worked in the tech industry.

Hao Meng-statement

In an era of progressive digitization of human life, the Metaverse, driven by capital and authority, pushes the human vision of a digital future to new heights. In the process of being pushed, technology is gradually squeezing out the residual social value that people are able to generate. People are not unaware of this; capital and authority place profit above foreseeable danger, oblivious to the concerns of other people. What are we to do when capital and authority use technology to change people's lifestyles and social environments for profit?

The era of progressive digitization is largely driven by profitable agendas, where Metaverse pushes the human vision of a digital future to new heights. In this process technology is gradually reducing social and moral values and often oblivious to the concerning impacts it might cause. What happens when the authority uses technology to change people's lifestyles and social environments only for profitable needs?

This project takes inspiration from my own relationship with technology and research, which helped to create Say goodbye to the World, which is a funeral of my spiritual death. The film is used as a metaphor to explore helplessness, inner struggle and concerns ahead of an uncertain future. Through this project, I would like the audience to reconsider their relationship with technology and question its future impact on our lives.
