Graphic Design

Nan Wang

I am a graphic designer and a visual communicator.

My research and work focuses on language and experience, exploring the boundary between different 'languages' under a specific context and experiencing them as practice, thinking and 'experience.'

I usually combine different media and work with publishing, photography, moving image, performance and sound design.

Keep Listening.

Keep Recording.

Keep Writing.

Nan Wang-statement

A word, when you do not know it is a sign; when you do know it, it becomes language.

The language can be sound,

the language can be performance,

the language can be experience,

the language can be thinking,

the language can be practice,

and the language can be writing.

What I am trying to explore is finding different 'new/unfamiliar' languages based on experience and stories to see the process of transformation between 'performance' and language, seeing what will happen after escaping from an effective and formal language system, and thinking about what role 'design' can play with in the performative language.

TAI CHI WRITING

Tai Chi Writing comes from the forty-two movements of Tai Chi, writing Tai Chi to a flowing and performative language in a poetic way.

I regard my experience of Tai Chi and understanding of Tai Chi as a stillness and flowing 'performance' inwardly and externally. I transform the experience and forty-two movements to forty-two characters, forming a 'Tai Chi language'.

I write and practice the Tai Chi language in daily life, including different sites, formats and situations to explore the semantics and performance of Tai Chi language and the language itself.

I am not only trying to decode the thought of the dialectical unity of Yin and Yang in the Tai Chi language and shows a series of lenses with alternative aspects under a specific cultural context, but also explore the boundary between language, cultural context, motion, stillness and design, and design as a role with poetic function to show a graphic performance.

Why listen to sounds and take sound notes?

We are surrounded by sounds: the sounds of home appliances working, the sounds of wheels over the ground on the outside, the sounds of chirping, the sounds of the wind, the sounds of my typing, the sounds of clothing friction…

Even though I block my ears I can still listen to the sounds from my body, my heartbeat, my breathing, my blood flowing…

When I settle down to listen to the sounds around me, each sound is like a unique instrument that makes up a symphony orchestra.

So hearing the noise of the car and the barking of the neighbour's dog doesn't bother me so much. When I listened to these sounds carefully, I felt immersed in the environment and became a part of it, which was an interesting and also strange experience.

The aim of Sound Notes is to explore possibilities/relationships of sounds in daily life rather than solve problems. It is like a magnifying glass: a way to discover and reveal the hidden and unnoticed sonic depths of daily life, to enjoy and feel the world.

The quality of each sound may be familiar/strange, predictable/improvised - characterised by simplicity/complexity, stillness/motion, proximity/distance or affectivity.
