Digital Direction (MA)

Pierre Armando Till Engelhard

Pierre Engelhard is a hybrid digital artist and designer motivated by the innovative use of creative technologies. Through a diverse set of digital experiences, ranging from animation to installation, Pierre has written a body of work that sets out to deconstruct and reappraise core concepts such as movement, time and space. Sound and music are the common instigators of these interactions, either as sources of inspiration or as devices to draw the audiences in. The tone is transparent and poetic, as the tension between disruption and wonder is used to flesh out these sensory experiences.

Pierre Armando Till Engelhard-statement

My research focuses on the impact of spatial design on emotional wellbeing. As a response to covid-induced lockdowns, spending an extended period of time indoors called for a reconsideration of the space we are living in. How do we claim that space through design? What role can technology play in enhancing our emotional bond to indoor spaces?

As a designer, my intentions are to communicate these issues to an audience as a way to raise awareness. As an artist, my goal is to relieve a possible frustration and gift a space of safety, with the possibility of an improved future through research-based solutions.

I explore ways to claim space through sound and movement.

Mobile Bodies is a months-long research project hoping to reconnect people with the space they occupy and the lost emotional connection to it. It aims to give an understanding of what the human/space relationship has evolved into since the beginning of the pandemic.

Alternative Outcome of SYNCHRONICITY

SYNCHRONICITY is an art experiment about sound and movement.

Using a generative sound system to create music, performers are able to generate unique sounds with their movements within a defined space.

Dancing in succession, every generated sound is the other performer's music to which they respond through movements. This pattern goes on for five cycles, resulting in a totality of 10 performances. The film ends with a global outcome of all the performances as a way to assess the similarity and thus, the level of synchronisation achieved by the performers after five cycles.

This film has been created as part of my art residency at SomaRumor II, the second South American sound art meeting.
