Qinyi Wang

Qinyi Wang is a mixed-media designer and artist. She is interested in how media experiences can incite moments in which audiences communicate with themselves, find themselves, and catch themselves. Her current work focuses on explorations of popular psychology, and the relationship between individuals and groups or societies, as this can be understood and enhanced through immersive experience design using brainwaves, affective computing and visual experience.

Qinyi has worked so far as a filmmaker, fashion designer, set designer, experimental immersive experience designer, art director, and graphic designer.

She holds a BA in Fashion and Accessory Design from Donghua University (2020) and has studied emergent fashion concepts at Central St Martins (2019).

Qinyi Wang-statement

Affective computing allows a computational device to detect and react in real-time to a user's nonverbal emotional cues. According to Mordor Intelligence's forecast, the affective computing market registers a compound annual growth rate of 30.42%, during the period of 2022- 2027. Affective computing is being widely used by capitals to manipulate humans' emotions. Publics' emotions come to be quantified and calculated all day, especially on social media. People's opinions on topical issues count by affective computing, which can convert to emotion currency.

Affective computing itself has no idea of influencing humans' emotions. The point is how is it being used? Hence I propose speculative thinking in the design research —— what if using the same approach to assist the public themselves directly, instead of being used by power centres mainly. What kind of future will it bring us to?

Nowadays, with the growing influence of idols in Asia, the fan economy and the fan culture appear promptly. Firstly, I have randomly interviewed different fans with various shooting approaches and props. Through the literature review on some professional papers and Oscar Wilde’s novel, I refined a key point about ‘Narcissism’, which included self-liquidating, the loss of individualities, and self-world indulgence. Applying these meanings to my research, I got the conclusion that ‘Some crazy fans are Narcissism, who were fascinated with some unreal illusions.’

This work illustrates these thoughts and ideas and illustrates the causes and consequences of being a crazy fan. The metaphor and documentary-style reflect the physical and mental changes in a fan’s life during the process. I create an unreal fancy world to show crazy fans’ crazy behaviours. The dramatic storytelling showed a crazy fan who came from a boring routine life to a crazy mode for the idol and finally realized and woke up.

With the rapid development of society, the public gets used to ignoring the self and sinks into a 'busy life' most of the time. This is a dangerous signal of self-loss. In this case, to a certain degree, focusing on the present enables individuals suffering the anxiety to enjoy more peaceful emotions and relieve the negative ones.

Inward Domain is a research project based on BCI, which aims to record brain waves and output data to access a better understanding of emotions, thereby setting up a bridge between people and their inner worlds.

In its current stage, we intend to explore the potential influence and feedback when personal emotions are intertwined with an immersive space encompassed by audio (alpha music) and vision (real-time interactive moving image). The introspective moods triggered by the current sphere provide subtle spiritual comfort to visitors.
