Ron Ziser-statement

My work explores the aesthetic, industrial and economic realities of a rapidly transforming world. Over the last few years I’ve been utilising various open-access workshops to create sculptures which blur the boundary between the digital and physical world. In developing sculptural objects based on modular systems of making, I construct processes that allow me to design, modulate, and reproduce objects that traverse the threshold between the these disparate realms. By working in this methodical and systematised manner, the work is framed by an inherent logic which is then re-examined, improved upon or discarded. Through this process I explore the tension between the constructed, cohesive object, and the spontaneity of artisanal production.

My involvement in the workshops I utilise for this artistic practice has spurred a broader interest in progressive economic trends which has become central theme in my work. Within a framework of post-Marxist theory I now see these spaces as a small part of wider industrial developments which have the potential to offer us a more economically balanced and democratic future, including blockchain technology, ride sharing platforms and decentralised applications etc. I share in the optimism embodied in these movements, whilst maintaining a degree of scepticism with regard to some of their claims. Artistically I aim to embed these complex ideas within more relatable imagery and motifs in order to create an experience which is both visually captivating and critically engaging.
