Democratising Cultural Workspace in London: An infrastructural approach , media item 1

The project explores the possibility of a democratic-oriented creative workspace in response to the crisis of the continuous migration of creative clusters out of the city and the difficulty of securing workspaces since the development of London's start-up industry. The purpose is to reflect on the commercialisation, gentrification and inequality that emerged in London's creative-led planning through policy and case studies to prove that democratic actions such as broader participation and management can be a solution. It uses the definition of fundamental principles and evaluation criteria to evaluate the degree of democratisation of the workspace and precedent studies and evaluations to show the impact of these elements on the development of the workspace and regional planning. Therefore, to ensure the democratisation strategy's implementation, ten action guidelines have been formulated based on previous research, encouraging a more open and transparent development process and establishing broader connections with the region. It will re-evaluate the development opportunities and delivery status of creative industry spaces to encourage these places to bring vitality to the community, shape regional characteristics, and ensure affordable working spaces for artists and creative workers.

'Compilation of dreams', media item 1

Dreaming takes place during REM, which stands for rapid eye movement. During this period, peoples mind is as active as it is during waking. However, when we are in a dream state, the brain is missing norepinephrine and serotonin that enable the brain to perform tasks, solve problems and remember things. Therefore, dreams are difficult to be fully recorded, described and experienced repeatedly and dream- related things can always trigger endless associations.

In the eyes of the ancients, dreams are a reflection of life and a foreboding of good or bad luck. They told their dreams to the dream interpreter to predict future. The Book of Zhougong's Interpretation of Dreams, recorded in "Tongsheng", is one of the dream dictionaries for interpreting dream information.

This project was inspired by this. Dreams are hard to share and repeat as a unique memory. Certain things in the dream reflect real life, different dreams produce similarities. This may be one of the reasons why dream books translate different objects into different meanings. In the process of sharing dreams, specific things in the fragments we record can awaken others to the same cognitive experiences, such as the fear of being hunted by giant spiders.

Looking at dreams in an irrational way, I record different dreams through my writing, reading, imagining, and painting, so they are modified and recorded layer by layer on the same sheepskin scroll. In turn, the viewer generates their own understanding when they read these images. A dream that maybe able to keep approaching the truth under the compilation of this process. In the end, the project recorded ten dreams as the beginning.

The importance of struggle & the struggle for importance in the formation of urban space, media item 1

Hi, I`m Ruoqi。

I am currently an architect interested in urban renewal and cultural spaces. I have been involved in different scales of practice in exhibitions, interiors, architecture and urban design in Shanghai and Xiamen.

I studied environmental art at the China Academy of Art, where I became passionate about design. Then I enrolled in city design at the Royal College of Art in 2020. Through topics such as post-pandemic, decarbonization, and wellness, I thought about the city's infrastructure and public spaces. In my independent research project, I propose the possibility of democratizing creative workspaces through research into London's creative industries.

Ruoqi Yu-statement

Rethink urban renewal

How do we deal with the displacement of vulnerable groups in urban development?

What have we lost in the new neighborhood?

Are we happy in the city?
