Samuel Domínguez-statement

The work explores our relationship with landscape by looking at systems of understanding plants and trees. This often comes by considering my Chilean background, establishing cultural and scientific notions of nature in the context of a global and digitalised society.

The project came from research about the Chilean tree 'Lawal' (known in the UK by the name Fitzroya), which is one of the oldest living organisms on the planet. Currently endangered in the South of Chile, the research took into account the relationship between Chile and the UK through the lens of the tree, going back to the Beagle expedition, to the current joint efforts to preserve the species.

The indigenous name 'Lawal' means 'grandmother', which is a poetic way of reflecting on how old these trees are, and the wisdom they can provide ecologically, culturally, and spiritually.

The print is a digital vectorised drawing that was laser engraved in wood. This became a woodcut that was inked as a traditional printmaking, becoming a hybrid between digital and traditional printmaking techniques. The drawing was made using cross hatching, inspired by the old masters. However, due to the digital nature of the process, the technique allowed to achieve perfect straight lines with machine-skills results.
