Ding Shilun was born in Guangzhou in 1998 and is a graduate from the Painting Department of the Royal College of Art. Ding is fascinated with the notion of ‘events’. His practice draws from both historical and recent events. Although the characters that appear in the body of works can be understood as the embodiment of the artist himself in daily life, Ding regards these characters as impossible miracles.
Ding tries to recognise today's conflicts in his own way, by analysing approximate historical events and even myths. These echoes from the past and the experience of what is happening in the present led him to develop a way of storytelling. By constructing different scenes of the pantomime, Ding attempts to describe his understanding of current tragedies through this screenwriting approach, which is often about the conflict between the individual and society, blood and family, ideology, and fear of the unknown.
