Wenjie Yu-statement

Wenjie Yu is an artist who pays attention to the contradictions, conflicts and connections between individuals and the world. He likes to think about simple things which nevertheless have deep meanings in daily life. As a young man who views the world with both with suspicion and innocence, he criticises the world in his pungent but humorous way. He is keen to create a unique experience for his audience by opening a continuing dialogue with his work. Aside from the outside world, he is also an artist who dedicates to exploring human beings’ self-consciousness. Through his own explorations he finds experimental ways to express what he discovers in human life, and always loves to hit the audiences with a new thought.

Sound art, installation, performance, painting, and video are all his media. He combined history and future in a leap way, showing that the present is both past and future. His inspiration system is huge and complex, so it is difficult to detect a specific clue of inspiration in his artwork. He is a mixed and complicated artist, and good at translating objects from his spiritual world directly to the real world by his artworks.

He makes absolute honesty and courage in art as his first priority. All his artworks are derived from his personal feelings and personal responses to the world. So, ironic humour always existing in his work. He has his own views on art and art itself. He is not afraid of challenge all the existing rules in the art world. He is changing every day while stable in his principles. and ”Not being changed by the world is actually changing the world.” He believes.

“It’s not that what is past casts its light on what is present, or what is present its light on the past; rather, image is that wherein what has been comes together in a flash with the now to form a constellation. In other words, image is dialectics at a standstill. For while the relation of the present to the past is a purely temporal, continuous one, the relation of what-has-been to the now is dialectical: is not progression but image, suddenly emergent. — Only dialectical images are genuine images (that is, not archaic); and the place where one encounters them is language.”

“There is a kind of bird in the world that has no feet. It keeps flying when it is born and sleeps in the wind when it is tired. This bird can only land once in its lifetime, and that is when it dies. But in fact, it has never been anywhere, it has been dead since birth.”

When people think that the formula for making gold can be obtained by summing up the experience of this alchemic gashapon machine, they do not realize that the chemical reaction part of the machine and the gashapon part are completely two separate parts. Do people often force experience into rules and truths, so that they can predict and grasp the future through rules and truths? Sometimes rules and truth may be such nonsense.
