Zhen Tang 唐稹-statement

I grew up in an industrial district in southwest China, where the noisy and colorful surroundings of my hometown shaped and nourished me. I use collage as a way of exploring my subconscious mind. I follow an improvised, fragmented approach, exploring topics related to desire, body and gender. I am interested in the definition of femininity, how our bodies relate to the world, animals and nature, and how advertising images shape our everyday sensation. I have created some absurd, humorous female characters as a provocation to the fantasy generated by consumerist culture and the traditional male gaze.

Influenced by my undergraduate studies in human geography and urban planning, my photographic practice has always focused on the relationship between the individual and the city. I use photography as a trigger for memories, capturing everyday moments with uncanny atmosphere. I always look backwards. I use photography to explore the impact of urbanization on individual and collective memory, and try to build a subjective city in my mind with fragmented images.

Fetish Island is a new, constructed environment inhabited by an army of girls with their own names and personalities, but all have very strong vitality. These characters are free, naughty and indulgent, representing the fluid, chaotic and dark side of my subconscious mind. This is also my personal expression of feminine power.

My work is Influenced by film, punk music, the DIY spirit and the feminist art movement. I use images from the fashion industry as my main resources, like a plastic surgery, I deconstruct parts of what would normally be considered the 'ideal body' parts and reconstruct them with elements of nature, animals, to create some superhuman species. By means of photomontage, I have created these characters as a provocation to the traditional male gaze, but also Break down the image of women in consumerist packaging and to re-examine the fantasy of desire in a consumerist society.

I create imaginary creatures, as a provocation to the image of fashion in the age of consumerism. They are like animals of desire in the fashion world, the city is their playground.
