Zhiyu Chen

Zhiyu Chen(陈枝煜), born in China

I prefer to explore the culture and our daily life, since I enjoy the process of capturing unique details around me. Then I could get some interesting inspiration and deepen my understanding of the real world and have some self-reflection.

Show Location: Battersea campus: Dyson & Woo Buildings, First floor

Zhiyu Chen-statement

The night might not be night

The work was inspired by my feeling of dreams. Sometimes, when I was dreaming and I met anything strange, unreasonable, and absurd in my dream, I probably thought these things were reasonable and real. So in the project, the night might not be night, the day is not day, the sky is not the sky…

The unclear person in the image is just like a fading memory of the unfamiliar thing in the dream. And I also try to create kinds of feelings of vertigo. Then I began to wonder whether what I see is real or not? And where am I actually? Are my vision and memory deceiving me? It’s like when the illusion or the dream is real enough it is hard to distinguish real from unreal. It reminds me of the connection between surreal and real.

Just to see things more clearly, when is to dream, when is the reality.

The image and photography are really good media for me to show and create the pieces of dreams. And I also feel the process of creating this project is more like creating a dream, a real but also unreal dream.

The night might not be night

The day is not day

The sky is not sky

The unclear faces fade from memory

The eyes see what is real, is unreal

The water has a shape

The tree in the queue

The sight is wrapped in boundaries

The hard building appears clearly over time

The heart feels what is lively, is lonely
