Jia Fei

I was born in Nanjing (China), graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts (Beijing) in 2019. I am currently studying and living in London.

I use visual communication as my practice, observation as a source of inspiration, to perceive and understand my surroundings.

I'm always experimenting and learning, in order to take on new challenges at any time.

Jia Fei-statement

Every morning, waking up from darkness and chaos, opening my eyes, my soul enters the real world.

The blurry ceiling on the top, the fluffy quilt covering my body, the latex pillow under my head. On my right is the phone with the charger, the nightstand with water glass and lipstick. . . My sight mapping my connection with the objects around me.

Walking out of the room and walking down the street, my eyes move with my body, leading me to see and become familiar with my surroundings.

I look up and down, left and right, inside and outside. The objects I observe gradually emerge from the vague images in my mind, emerging in size, colour, texture and specific details, and become collections in my memory archives. Unique and sparkling.

Launch Project

This is a one-month observation and discussion activity on the cube initiated by Muxin Liu and me.

The cube focuses on a conceptual object. Through multi-angle observation and the establishment of rules, we have a profound understanding of the relation between humans and the material world.

Project 02. The street tree, Printing

This is a study of observations of street trees. I focused on the London plane, the most planted street tree in London.

The traces on the crown, trunk and roots reflect the interaction and mutual influence between people and trees and also reflect the state of creatures in the city.

Launch Project

This project is about observations and reflections on incorporating earthworms into human space, focusing on exploring how observation can actually make people see objects without functionality.

Through observational writing, I appreciate the complexity of earthworms and the hostile tension between human space and earthworm space.

Launch Project

Objects for what? is a continuously developing set of guided observational practices. People are welcome to gain reflection from ordinary things by changing their habitual ways of seeing. Three objects are included in the current observation practices: the cube, the street tree, and the earthworm.

Gaining reflection through observation is based on the traditional Chinese philosophical thought Gewu Zhizhi (investigation of things). Through observation and analysis of things, people can acquire knowledge and divergent thinking.

The website provides observation guides, observation forms and reference works, encouraging the audience to expand their perception and enrich their cognition through observation.
