Mixed Media

Jinglun Zhou

Jinglun Zhou is a mixed media artist, with a focus on strong texture and personal identity through experimental material combinations.

Taking ‘Contradiction' as his design philosophy, Jinglun explored the contradiction of materialism and idealism throughout his MA, exploring a range of fields including art, space, and the internet.

Jinglun graduated from the Shanghai Institution of Visual Art with a BA in Fashion Design, where he discovered his passion for textiles and materials. He took a gap year to work in an interior design studio, MHPD, where he worked on projects in collaboration with brands like Tom Dixon, Gucci and Mason Margiela. The artwork ‘Fountain’ he was in charge of during his internship was invited to be shown at Beijing Design Exhibition.

Show Location: Battersea campus: Studio Building, Third floor

Jinglun Zhou-statement

We are recording, digitalizing, uploading and storing everything.

Our world is built on data.

We observe, we experience, we learn. Meanwhile we blunder, we deceive, we conceal.

Data inevitably contain both objectivity and subjectivity, the veracity of it should always be questioned.

We are being through a compiled era, where the 'truth' and the traditional idea of time are challenged.

'It's not about thinking the fake is true, it's about thinking the truth might be fake'

Then, how can we tell the world is as real as we think?

Welcome to '2000-2021 Compiled' !

Let me lead you though this E-magazine and you might find the answer.

The experience of working online throughout the second year of the program has affected the direction of my practice, besides with no access to any machine when it's come to making as I was undertaking a serious lockdown in China, this project is formed to be all digital outcome. However, all these conditions push me to present textiles in an innovative way.

Internet is another form of textile. Data are used as thread, with various tools and techniques, the outcomes change.

Statement, media item 1

I devided my theme into three chapters.

  • How truth and lies are woven together
  • Everything are just experiences
  • The compiled era

Welcome to Astinet, here's the main page with the headline ' A 13-year-old boy has designed a scanner that can 'read' the book then input into computer'. Well, sounds too good to believe, and yes, it's just a piece of work that I made up with secondhand materials I collect. However, compared to the news and advertisements on the right side, which seems to be more ridiculous? And are they real?

Nowadays we are so easily giving out information about us, posting every details online. Unfortunately, someone would use all these data to manipulate, to trigger, to change and you are not even aware of it. Examples as the Cambridge Analytica Scandal.

This product sounds like total non-sense, but we are now trying several new ways of storing data, such on a small piece of glass. So maybe in the future, the Triplax won't only be an imaginary product.

Triplax

Check this innovative form of storing data. The 3D QR Cubes can store up to 5tb in total and only cost for ten cups of coffee!

Take the hint
Take the hintLook around, look at the so called physical world closely. We are keep digitalizing our surroundings and uploading to the internet, and making it as real as possible. We seem trying so hard to stimulate our world into another space, but what if we already succeeded? Where are we right now? What are we?
Punched to future
Punched to futureThis page shows the connection of data, textiles and construction. The punched card for Jacquard loom developed into the modern computing. Quoting Gottfried Semper's philosophy of cladding theory, 'the beginning of building coincides with the beginning of textiles', the links of these three then become clear.

Reality Simulator

Everything is programmed, everything is just experience.

I see data as individuals, and we are just programmed to 'live' in the construction called buildings, which is a form of storage devices for data.

Ereal Estate

We don't sell real estate. We sell experiences.

In EE, we provide the whole experience of living in the places without actually being there! You are opened to tons of choices and each of them will take you to a special journey.

*You can get 50% off if you become a member now ;)

Twenty years ago we are being annoyed by massive pop up windows and now we just can't see what we wanted, as we are not allowed.
Twenty years ago we are being annoyed by massive pop up windows and now we just can't see what we wanted, as we are not allowed.

We are in the compiled era.

The past, current and future all in one page.

Here's a little game. Please stare at the disc and imagine the texture it's about, then I will play a short sound.

Compiled Senses

We use our eyes so rapidly then we ignore the rest. We use our eyes to guess how food would taste like, to feel the texture of fabric, to measure right or wrong. And we use our ears to touch, to believe what others told us, instead of experiencing with heart.

Chapter 3 - The end (?), media item 1

Compile of reality and internet

That's almost the end of our journey! Hope you enjoyed.

You can leave through the raft in the phone, either to the reality you believe, or to the world you imagine.

Goodbye and Welcome, as everything is compiled.
