Design Through Making

Yao Pan

Yao Pan is a Chinese Industrial and Product Designer, currently working in furniture and consumer electronics design.

Started his education in sculpture and mechnical engineering in the United States (Union College, NY, 2019), further trained as Product Designer in the United Kingdom (Royal College of Art, 2022). Yao Pan's work is multidimensional, reflecting from social contexts, user experience, manufacturing, and sustainability, exploring the possibilities and potentialities of redesigning product and its system to its simplest form through making and experimenting.

Yao Pan-statement

As a maker, I always look for a balance in thinking and making. I believe this approach is what really helps my project development. I enjoy myself explore, experiment, prototype, test things out, this is how I research. I always try to start getting hands on throughout the design process, this allows me to think in multi-dimensions and understand how things are made and used in various scales.

My project Platform. questioned the system of current furniture industry on how to maximise the efficiency of production and product life cycle, where furniture is used to be designed and made indentically for each model and purpose. When talking about modularity in furniture design, we mainly focused on how furniture can be customised into different configurations based on users’ needs, but never from a manufacturing perspective to think about how to create a more efficient and sustainable production system where furniture could have unified platform and sharing parts across models like car industry.

The platform.parts are compact and removable due to the flat structure. This enables the ease of transport, storage and practical needs of indoor/outdoor scenarios. Using ready-made and mass produced product such as stainless steel and aluminium flat bar and plywood as strucutural components enable to avoid adding nearly any post production features to reduce manufacturing steps and reduce ecological impact. It also encourages participation in short distance supply chains, encouraging to produce both globally and locally to make the system of production and service more efficient and sustainable in a larger scale.
