Yu Hu

Yu Hu is an Interdisciplinary designer from RCA Textiles-Soft System. She works with material, fashion, and technology.


Yu Hu focuses on creating organic morphological variations of materials to explore the dynamic aesthetics of living beings and the chaos space between the digital and the physical world.


Influenced by the Eastern philosophy of "unity of nature and humanity" since childhood, Her work is always based on personal experience and subjective feelings of interaction with nature. She explores how textiles can be used as a bridge between people's real emotions and new technologies by combining multidisciplinary knowledge.


CHAOS- Liquidity Consciousness

This project developed an interactive system that visualises people's emotional states through a dynamic textile installation.  By fusing neuroscience with textile technology, the system uses brainwave data from the audience as input and visualises human consciousness through live textile structures constructed of tubing and coloured liquid which is programmed through the use of creative technology. People can control the colour (liquid) and pattern (speed) of the textiles by thinking, meditating and through other different states of consciousness.


In addition, This interactive installation is designed to help people relieve their mental stress and focus on themselves to fill the gap created by the lack of intimate personal attention and interaction in the context of pandemic.




The system breaks down the boundaries between virtual consciousness states and the physical worldpeople can feel themselves through material changes and control them at the same time. It combines neuroscience with textile design to allow the audience to experience self-communication.

Controlling textile changes with consciousness

Here are the steps for the audience to participate in this interactive system:

Step1: The user wears an EEG monitoring headband to extract the following four EEG data: Attention, Beta Delta and Theta

Step2: The data is transferred to the computer via Bluetooth, the screen shows the real-time data changes in the four-wave data, and the data are passed into the code as inputs.

Step3: There are four different colorud liquids in tubes to represent the four brain waves, when the monitored data exceeds the average value the Arduino will control the speed of the corresponding colored pumps.
