Yulu Chen

Hi, How are you?I'm Yulu Chen (b.1996 China). I don't always consider myself a graphic designer, but I think of myself as a visual communicator. If you look closely at my practice you will see that I am inspired by my surroundings. My work is both quiet and loud, passionate and subdued, happy and sad, gentle and grumpy. My work involves graphic design, visual communication and probably more disciplines in the future.

My practice focuses on exploring the role of play in relation to my roles as a graphic designer and student of ethnic groups in the UK.

As a result of my research, I have created a documentary book titles, the line of beauty. It came out of my observations and recordings and the recreating of the movement when members of the public play with each other. This book shows my idea of ‘the concern with performance’ in the realm of behavior and uncontrollable consequences. While strongly influenced by the computer, this approach has assisted me in all my creative processes.

I was looking for a way to build a mix between people from different cultural backgrounds. I choose traditional games as the way to achieve this. Games have the ability to act as a bridge to connect cultural differences. By playing traditional games, I believe we can make connections between people. I therefore propose to implement traditional games in public spaces. For example, in the corner-shop, the street market and the public park where the relationships are often on the surface and fleeting, rather than sustained.

Many scholars have judged that the policy has promoted integration between people of different backgrounds but has not actually achieved real integration; people are separated from each other.

The 'mere-exposure' effect describes our tendency to develop preferences for things simply because we are familiar with them. As the community continues to promote the theme of traditional games on a weekly basis, residents are influenced by the rhythm of their daily lives to engage in live interaction with people from different backgrounds in the community.

Through constant selection, this guide focuses on collecting traditional games with multiplayer interaction and a sense of non-competition. Nine games are currently included, some of which have been proven to work through field practice.

With the RCA's help I was able to contact the Children'sCcentre in Hammersmith, where I played traditional games with the children in the community.

Special thanks to my classmates: yuchen/frances(qiyao) for helping me organize them.
