Weave

Yu Liu

Yu Liu is a woven textiles artist based in London and China.

In Yu's textile practice, she focuses on the process of weaving and self-exploration.

The process of weaving is also a dialogue with herself, and the choice of each material comes from a review of her own experiences and an analysis of herself.

The different colours are an overview of each stage of her life.

Yu Liu-statement

My intention is to " Express" personal stories of growth and reflection through yarn, structure, color, and weaving.

" Expression" is a unidirectional process: from the idea to the work and then to the interpretation of the audience.

The difference is that for me and the weaving there is a bidirectional dialogue.

On the weaving loom, in the beginning, the yarn follows my thoughts, and then I follow the state of the yarn as I weave.

Each thread seems to be alive at times, with personality and thoughts.

The weaving is an intricate combination of rationality and intuition.

It can be simultaneously involuntary and controlled.

The Same is true of a lifetime.

Textiles can be our autobiography and identity.

Through them, we may be able to cross the boundaries of absence and death and trace loving connections as textiles can carry absent bodies, memories, genealogies, and characteristics of their materiality.
